2021 saw the concert band launch a major fundraising effort to purchase two new timpani. Previously operating on only half a set, it is delightful to now have the full range opening up pieces that were not possibly before. For those not in the know, timpani are a tune-able drums able to play specific notes. The largest drum can play the lowest notes, and the smallest play the highest. Played with soft mallets and tuned with a foot pedal, the pitch needs to be adjusted to make those glorious dramatic rolls you hear coming through in many works.
We are incredibly grateful for grants from the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board and the BlueSky Community Trust which contributed greatly towards our ability to purchase our new 23″ and 32″ timps.
